Edinboro’s Great Commerical Contest Comment

January 25, 2009

If you haven’t recently read the blog about the “Great” Commerical Contest and how it wasn’t up to par, you absolutely should.

On that post, this comment was left:

MacCato -The funny thing is that 1/2 of the commercials that made the top 6 were submitted very close to the deadline, but they were so good that they quickly worked their way up the charts. Plus, it didn’t matter how many votes they got as the popular votes only got them into the running to be judged by a panel of judges based on originality and overall appeal.

However some did realize that the sooner they submitted the longer they had opportunity to get votes. Good for them. Everyone had the same opportunity. I thought it was a fun and creative marketing campaign.

Let’s break this down, shall we?

The funny thing is that 1/2 of the commercials that made the top 6 were submitted very close to the deadline…

I don’t care when they were submitted because honestly, the way the voting went was, by any logical standards, stupid. There is a time for submitting, and there is a time for voting. When you mix the two, instead of having the end product be fairness, you’re left with shit.

To see how unsound the system actually was, let us apply this whole ideology behind the way the contestants were voted on to a real world situation. I’m sure you can think of a vast array of subjects that deal with voting, but the most prominent one, I believe, would be politicians who are running for office. Please take note that the following is completely theoretical and what is said is based on absolutely nothing, except the contest, of course.

We’ll rewind to this past Presidential election. Let’s say there are 6 Democrats and 6 Republicans who are thinking about running for President. 3 candidates from each side declare that they will, in fact, be running. You might also say they are “submitting” their “video” for “that Super Bowl contest”.

As soon as those 6 candidates (3 Rep. and 3 Dem.) declare, the people who are capable/want to vote begin voting. They vote and vote and vote. They continue to vote for these limited amount of candidates before a set deadline. However, the remaining 6 declare they’ll be running right before the deadline, and by this point most people have already voted. They aren’t allowed to vote again, so they can’t change their mind.

I’m not sure how many times you could’ve voted for the commericals, but in the real, fair world you should only be allowed one vote for one video.

Anyways, the top candidates include George Clinton, the master of funk, with 10 votes, Hillary Clinton with 8, and newly announced Democrat Ralph Nader with 13. For the Republicans, McCain has 10, Ron Paul 7, and Nixon 6. I know Nixon is dead, but I don’t care about politics much and want to keep this as simple as possible.

As for those other 6 candidates, including Obama… too bad, you didn’t declare with enough time and only received 2 to 3 votes.

Question: How much sense does this make?  Answer: None.

Moving on…

Frank Zappa at Boro

January 25, 2009

Anyone from the area should know that Zappa’s album “Roxy and Elsewhere” was done completely at the Roxy (I think, aside from another song) and ONE song was done in Edinboro in 1974!

BUT- what puzzles me is that I have never seen a picture or video of Zappa at Edinboro. Why not? This had to have been a huge fucking deal when it happened. This came up on youtube recently- and it sounds great!

This was the song off of the album that was done live without overdubbing at Edinboro.

If you’re reading this and have pictures or videos or anything from Zappa in Edinboro, could you leave a comment? I mean, afterall- I challenge you to name one person who is more important than Frank Zappa who has visited the Boro in the last 40 years!

Take two?

No offense to Melissa or anything, she seems like a very nice girl, but these BoroOnline videos are extremely boring and unprofessional. Let’s ignore that this video is basically just telling us “clothes make you warm” and focus on the production and editing. Well, we can’t really, because those things don’t exist. This isn’t a live feed or anything, you can do a second take, or a third, or however many it takes to have a smooth and appealing videomessage. Everyone does it.

I’m not gunna lie, she’s at least gotten much better at doing what she does:
