I understand that a shooting at a high school basketball game is devastating and should be dealt with properly. This move by General McLane Superintendent Alan Karns, however, was a terrible idea.
“Karns sent an e-mail to nine other Erie County superintendents saying his district was pulling out of sporting events held in Erie city schools after the East High School shooting.”
The decision the school has made is to no longer hold sporting events at city schools. As Karns wrote in his e-mail, “I realize this may well be an isolated incident, and actually I would agree, but I am not going to take any risks and appear negligent. Wanted you to be aware of our position at this time.”
General McLane is way off on this one. While East High may be pinned as a “violent” school (which is really sad, considering Al Roker was there once) this does not increase the chance of violence at any other inner-city schools.
I really feel for the students, who it seems had nothing to do with the shooting last week. One student said ”East is a very good school. The situation just happened here. It had nothing to do with our school.”
Exactly. This had nothing to do with the school and students.

Secondly, GM is just fueling the fire, adding more of a stigma to the already “violent” school, as the Erie Times-News has made it out to be. Not only are they so naive to think that moving their games will prevent any sort of violence, but they’re trying to get other school districts on the bandwagon. Karns should have just declared an all-out ban on the city and its violence. Don’t cut off your nose to spite your face; if Karns and other country-folk ever reconsider playing games in the city, they might be in for a rude awakening.
